Frequently Asked Questions

HOW IS BLACK DOG SALVAGE FURNITURE PAINT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PAINTS?

Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint is a water-based, low VOC, matte finish paint originally developed for our custom fabrication shop. Our goal was to create a safe and easy-to-use, customizable paint for all types of furniture projects. Made in small batches in the USA, our paint line includes 16 pre-mixed colors, including a true black and white, affording you the ability to mix custom tints and shades. There is no limit to the colors you can create.

Black Dog Furniture Paint dries to a velvety, matte finish and can be used on a multitude of surfaces, including glass, metal, wood, and ceramics. Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint can be applied over paint, varnish, lacquer, or poly. Apply the paint to a clean surface using either the brush of your choice or a paint sprayer. Easily create distressed effects, washes, or bright, bold, contemporary finishes with our expandable palette.

IS IT CHALK PAINT?

Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint is not chalk paint as defined by others in the marketplace. Most chalk paints are latex-based with a calcium carbonate additive. Ours is a 50/50 latex/acrylic base with calcium carbonate and other clay & mineral bodies for maximum adhesion and self-leveling ability.

CAN YOU USE IT TO PAINT WALLS?

Yes, but it will require a topcoat - a two-step process that would be more costly and time-consuming than regular wall paint.

HOW MUCH / WHAT KIND OF PREP IS NEEDED?

No prep is needed other than thorough cleaning of the piece before you begin to paint. We suggest using TSP or Krud Kutter, then clean all surfaces until you no longer see any dirty water. Follow that with a good wipe down using clear water to remove any last residue. Do not use products like Murphy’s Oil Soap or dishwashing soap before painting.

BDSFP offers maximum adhesion ability on any surface and can be used over varnish, poly, paint, stain, bare wood, metal and glass. You may want to sand any chipped or scratched areas after the cleaning process.

CAN YOU USE IT OUTSIDE?

Yes, BDSFP can be used outside, but you must apply three to five coats of a good quality EXTERIOR topcoat. The sun will naturally remove a layer of topcoat each year, so you will need to reapply every two to three years. (Guard Dog and Show Dog topcoats are for interior use only)

Yes, BDSFP is water-based and low VOC for easy use and easy cleanup.

CAN YOU USE WATER TO THIN IT?

Yes, but use distilled water only as tap water often contains elements that can affect the paint.

IS YOUR BLACK PAINT A TRUE BLACK?

Yes, BDSFP is a true black, one of the few paint brands that offers one. Our white is also a true white.

DOES IT NEED A TOPCOAT?

Yes, a good topcoat is always recommended for sealing the paint. Try Guard Dog where extra durability is needed or Show Dog for a crystal-clear finish that does not yellow, even over white. Both are available in matte and satin sheens.

CAN YOU USE WAX INSTEAD OF A TOPCOAT?

Yes, a wax finish may be used over the paint instead of a topcoat, if desired.

WHAT IS A “PART”? (IN REFERENCE TO PAINT RECIPES)

A part is any equal, measured amount from a tablespoon for small jobs, to a quart or more for large jobs.
